At this point, the Republican attack on Obama appears to be working. Over the past eight weeks, Obama has dropped from a commanding double-digit lead to a dead even horse race that is now within the margin of error – or worse. If the campaign continues on this course, McCain will command a large lead by Labor Day.

I think you underestimate Obama's own role in this.

Colin Powell as VP pick may be a vote-catcher, but who can forget the low point of this man's career when he made the Bush/Cheney casus belli at the UN? He could have done the honourable thing and resigned, credibility intact, to protest the inexorable march to this illegal war. But he did not. Instead, he stood up and parroted the fake intel. And you want THIS man for VP? Malcolm X had a name for people like him which I am reluctant to use (although Harry Belafonte did back in 2002!) ... but you know the one I mean.

Iraq is off the front pages now. A million dead. A million displaced. Baghdad carved up by cement walls into sectarian ghettos, ill kempt with excrement flowing in the streets. But nevermind, we have an election coming up and there is a good chance one of the prime architects of this travesty will be the democratic VP. Surely some mistake? - Reg Corleonis
